Underwriter Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Underwriter to join our team. In this role, you will evaluate insurance applications, analyze financial and statistical data, and determine policy terms that balance risk and profitability. You will collaborate with actuaries, claims adjusters, and other professionals to identify risk factors and implement effective solutions.

As an Underwriter, you will stay informed of industry developments and regulatory requirements, ensuring that policies and decisions meet compliance standards. Your ability to assess risk accurately and communicate decisions clearly will be critical to maintaining the company’s financial stability and reputation.

In this role, you will: 

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with actuaries, claims adjusters, and other stakeholders to identify risk factors and develop risk mitigation strategies.
  • Data Analysis and Insights: Analyze financial and statistical data to assess risks, identify emerging trends, and provide actionable insights.
  • Industry Knowledge and Compliance: Stay current with industry trends, regulatory requirements, and best practices to ensure compliance and informed decision-making.
  • Risk Assessment and Underwriting: Evaluate insurance applications, assess risks, and make informed decisions on approval, modification, or rejection.
  • Premium and Policy Development: Determine appropriate premiums, policy terms, and coverage levels based on risk analysis and company guidelines.
  • Effective Communication: Communicate underwriting decisions, policy terms, and risk assessments to stakeholders clearly and professionally.

Essential Skills & Qualifications:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Professional Experience: Proven experience as an Underwriter or in a similar role.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and decision-making skills to assess risk and develop solutions.
  • Underwriting Expertise: Comprehensive knowledge of underwriting principles, policies, and procedures.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with underwriting software and data analysis tools.
  • Certification: Relevant certifications such as Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) or Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU).
  • Industry Knowledge: In-depth understanding of specific insurance sectors, such as real estate or commercial property.
  • Problem-Solving Expertise: Proven ability to develop creative solutions to complex risk scenarios.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Experience ensuring policies align with industry regulations and standards.
